TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ancol Dreamland area will soon be the location of an official racing event managed by the Metro Jaya Police meant to accommodate illegal street racers, which has indisposed major streets in the capital city of Jakarta.

Metro Jaya Police Chief Insp. Gen. Fadil Imran on Monday has met with the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) chairperson Bambang Soesatyo and Ancol Dreamland president director Teuku Sahir Syahali to discuss the plan.

“We finally agreed to make Ancol one of the places young people can channel their urge for racing,” said Soesatyo on December 20.

The official date for the racing event is said to be held on January 15 and will be held in two formats; road racing around a series of corners and drag racing in a makeshift drag strip. The event, he said, will not only consist of races but other events that will elevate the local economy.

Interestingly, the Police Chief said safety gears such as racing boots, helmets, and racing suits will be borrowed by IMI without charging racing participants.

“This is so they would not race using flip-flops,” Fadli quipped.
