TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Covid-19 outbreak at the end of 2019 forced people to abruptly adjust to a new habit related to health protocols, stay home orders, and the implementation of remote working. All of these and added general anxiety towards the thought of a viral spread among us has eventually led to sleep disorders..

“Sleep quantity has been affected if one’s sleep duration does not correspond to a person’s sleep needs,” said dr. Kristiane Siahaan and dr Rayinda Raumanen Mamahit cited from University of Indonesia website.

“Sleep disorders can be trouble falling asleep, having trouble staying asleep, or getting up earlier than expected,” they said.

A person’s sleep quality can be said to be interrupted if a person wakes up in the middle of their sleep. If this becomes a recurrence for at least three times a week, it can be considered signs of insomnia.

According to the experts, trouble falling asleep can be caused by many factors that can be traced back to daily activities such as caffeine consumption, smoking habits, taking long naps during the day, or doing activities that increase the psychological stimulation prior to sleeping such as watching the television or other activities using gadgets.

Mental conditions can also cause people to experience sleep disorders such as stress, anxiety, or sadness can cause these sleep disorders that have a great psychological effect and can cause mood swings and depression.

"If the disorder continues to occur and is difficult to overcome, you should further consult a mental health clinic," the experts suggest.
