TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The East Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (East Javan BPBD) on Tuesday reported at least 2,970 houses that sustained damages caused by the volcanic ash eruption of Mount Semeru last Saturday.

The agency’s mitigation control manager Dino Andalananto said the damages range from mild to severe damages. “Houses that can no longer be lived in will be rebuilt in another location,” said Dino to Tempo on December 7.

However, he said the government will need time to rehabilitate the region due to the extensive damages caused by the eruption.

The Public Works and Public Housing Department also announced that it will later conduct an assessment of all houses affected by volcanic ash. The decision to relocate will wait for an assessment from the Ministry of PUPR.

"We also have other homeworks apart from houses as other facilities were also damaged, such as the Silver Deck bridge," said Dino. "If you look at this case, it is quite difficult to handle because the old and new bridges no longer exist because they were washed away by the cold lava."

Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Suharyanto said the government has set a goal to rebuild houses owned by locals within six months.
