Jokowi Arrives in Regions Devastated by Mount Semeru Eruption

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at 7AM Tuesday morning departed from Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base onboard the Indonesia-1 aircraft to visit locations that were heavily affected by the Mount Semeru eruption on Saturday.
As the President and his entourage arrived at the Juanda International Airport in Sidoarjo, they continued their trip to the Lumajang area aboard the Air Force’s Super Puma helicopter, as this is the most affected region by the ash clouds from the volcanic eruption.
"After a 30-minute flight from Juanda International Airport, President Jokowi and his entourage arrived at the Srikandi Stadium Helipad In the Lumajang Regency.” said Bey Machmudin, Presidential Secretariat’s Protocol, Press, and Media on December 7.
Mount Semeru erupted a large volume of hot clouds on Saturday, December 4, which government sources estimated reached 11 kilometers upwards. The sudden eruption and the sheer amount of volcanic ash released to the skies blocked the sunlight in the area, in which it was suddenly consumed in darkness within minutes.
