TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head of operations Abdul Muhari on Monday evening reported that the death toll caused by the eruption of Mount Semeru in East Java increased to 22 as of December 6.

Citing Antaranews, he said 22 people are still reportedly missing while there are 56 people sustaining burn injuries caused by exposure to the searing heat of the volcanic ash clouds that covered the mountain’s nearby regions, as of 8 PM on Monday.

The BNPB says there are 5,205 people affected by the eruption with 2,004 people displaced from their homes and are now temporarily residing in refugee camps spread in 19 locations in the sub-districts of Pronojiwo, Candipuro, and Pasirian.

“In regards to the missing people, [humanitarian posts] are currently validating and gathering more data,” said Muhari.

The hot volcanic ash clouds that fell to residential areas along with rainfall caused widespread destruction in a plethora of public infrastructures, with the worst being a bridge that was completely wiped off by cold lava stream.
