TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir said he plans to officially propose national pension funds to be included in the financial legal system in 2022. The plan aims to prevent this type of fund from being subjects of corruption and ending up harming its rightful owners.

"Too many pension funds have become media of corruption which resulted in bills not being paid," said Erick to Commission VI DPR, Thursday, December 2, 2021.

He argues that pension funds are generally massive and would further add complexity if it ends up in corruption.

“It would be understandable if problems are caused by mistakes, or if a company's finances are not healthy. But [it is not understandable] if we play with investment, or create new high-leverage products which eventually become stuck,” said Erick.

Before proposing pension funds to be included in the financial legal system, Erick will take the issue to a focus group along with Commission VI of the House legislators. The Minister’s concerns are closely related to two major scandals involving pension funds: Jiwasraya and Asabri.
