TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Chairperson of the Genetics Working Group, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Gunadi, in the university’s official website stated there is no sufficient evidence of the Covid-19 Omicron variant being more infectious than the Delta variant.
“There is yet enough evidence. Only proving that there are reinfections. But even for that the evidence is still at a minimum,” said Gunadi in the ugm.ac.id website cited on November 30.
The doctor said Covid-19 viruses will continue to mutate and give birth to new variants with various levels of threats.
However, he highly concurs with the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation regarding the Omicron variant and firmly believes the way to prevent the spread of this new variant is through strict health protocol implementations.
“People should remain aware and not be overly distressed. Especially considering the government has enacted preventive measures which includes closing airport gates for foreign nationals from countries that have detected Omicron cases,” he added.
