TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi inaugurated the Karalloe Dam in Gowa, South Sulawesi on Tuesday, November 23. The dam, which cost Rp1.27 trillion to build, has a capacity of 40.50 million cubic meters and an inundation area of 145 hectares.

In his speech, Jokowi said that although it is located in Gowa Regency, the Karalloe Dam will irrigate 7,000 hectares of agricultural land in Jeneponto Regency. With that, the President hopes that farmers' productivity and welfare can increase.

"With the existence of the Karalloe Dam, farmers who previously only harvested rice once, crops once, can later harvest rice twice and crops once," he said.

The Karalloe Dam is also expected to reduce flooding in Jeneponto Regency by up to 49 percent, as well as providing other benefits including generating 4.5 megawatts of electricity and providing 440 liters/second of water. The dam is expected to become a tourism object as well.

After inaugurating the dam, Jokowi sowed fish seeds and had a dialogue with a number of farmers.
