TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An epidemiologist from Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Tonang Dwi Ardyanto said applying the COVID-19 health protocols, such as wearing a face mask, is a personal responsibility. He made the statement in response to the current situation that many people start to ignore the health orders as cases continued to decline.

“It is a personal responsibility to wear a mask properly and wash hands regularly. Meanwhile maintaining the distance, duration, managing room ventilation and the number of people gathering in a place are the public responsibility,” said Tonang in a text message on Monday, November 22.

Meanwhile, the government is responsible for enforcing the rules, providing a sense of security, and protecting tolerance. “Remember that the pandemic is not yet over and the health protocols have not been yet lifted,” he asserted.

The clinical pathologist also appealed to the public to remind others to put on their masks if possible. However, in case it is not possible, Tonang advised staying still and wearing a mask.

“Do not feel odd [for wearing a mask alone]. We don’t do anything wrong, let alone harming people in this current situation [of COVID-19 pandemic],” he remarked.

Tonang further underlined that it is best to keep wearing a face mask in public places because the risk of COVID-19 transmission still exists if people ignore the health protocols.
