TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wearing a face mask is compulsory when going outside or feeling unwell. It may, however, cause skin problems such as breakouts or acne known as maskne.

Dermatologist and gynecologist Arini Astasari Widodo explains that acne caused by wearing a face mask for a long time is triggered by a number of factors, including skin conditions that are too moist, friction between the mask and the skin, cosmetics, and skin allergies to the mask material.

“There are many causes of maskne,” said Arini in an online discussion on Wednesday, November 17.

Arini thus suggests three keys to prevent skin problems as follows:

  • Clean face

Make sure your face is clean before putting on the mask and immediately wash your face after removing the mask.

For those wearing make-up or skincare products, Arini reminds them to use only a thin layer and not apply makeup when wearing a mask.

  • Wear a clean mask

Make sure the mask is clean and maintain its hygiene, such as by changing the mask every four hours. “Don't reuse single-use masks,” she asserted.

  • Choose the proper material of the mask

Arini underlines that it is necessary to choose a breathable mask while protecting self from COVID-19 infection. She mentions that linen fabric, for example, is a bit stretchy but rough on the skin that may cause damage to the skin’s surface.

“Choose a face mask with soft material for the skin and avoid those with fragrances and softeners,” she said.
