TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Development Research Center (BPPTKG) reported that three hours of rain struck the peak area of Mount Merapi on Tuesday evening, November 9, with a rainfall of 71 millimeters.

The agency’s head Hanik Humaida said the rain started at 14:51 local time. “And it continues until now.” Hanik called on people residing or doing activities along the river channel that originates at the volcano to be aware of the danger of lava floods.

BPPTKG also noted that from 00:00 to 12:00 local time, there was no avalanche activity from the volcanic mountain, either incandescent lava or hot clouds. However, the officer recorded a sound of avalanches once at a below-medium intensity.

Meanwhile, on Monday, November 8, from 00:00 to 24:00 local time, the mountain emitted incandescent lava 13 times with a maximum sliding distance of 2,000 meters to the southwest. The agency also recorded a roaring sound three times at low to moderate intensity. The mountain’s activity status is still on standby or Siaga.

Sleman Regent Kustini Sri Purnomo also asked residents to stay vigilant and prepare anticipatory measures in dealing with natural disasters at the end of 2021. “Sleman has several potential disasters such as the threat of Mount Merapi eruption, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, and cold lava floods,” Kustini said on Tuesday.
