TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with magnitude 5.0 in Richter scale hit Nias on Tuesday evening, Nov. 2. No tsunami potential was recorded.

The Meteorology Climatology and Geophysiscs Agncy or BMKG informed that the quake shook the region at 20:39 Western Indonesia Time. The epicenter was at the sea, 138 kilometer southwest of West Nias, North Sumatra.The hypocenter was recorded at 10 kilometer.

The first earthquake occured in the same location in the early days at 00:04 local time, which was recorded at M 5.9. In the morning, BMKG logged 10 aftershocks in West Nias.

The first quake was reportedly sourced from outside of subduction zone, not from the megathrust zone that has the potential to produce a huge quake. "It could be seen from the mechanism of the source which was a normal fault," said BMKG coordinator of earthquake and tsunami mitigation department, Daryono.

The shaking was felt in West Nias, Mentawai Islands, North Nias, and South Nias with the intensity of III-IV MMI level. It was clearly felt inside the house, as if a truck passing by, creating rattling sounds from the windows and the doors, the walls, even it could break earthenwares.

The earthquake was also felt in Aceh Singkil, Gunung Sitoli, and West Pak Pak, with various intensity from II-III MMI level.
