TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) director general of application Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan on Tuesday said Indonesia’s biggest challenge in the digital transformation age is the lack of what he considers ‘digital talents.’

He cited World Bank data in 2018 stating that Indonesia would need at least 9 million talents for the next 15 years, or an average of 600 thousand people annually.

“That number is not insignificant. Attempts to increase and develop talents must be pushed,” said the director general in a virtual event for MSMEs on October 26.

Kominfo plans to provide programs in the basic, middle, and higher levels starting from a national digital literacy movement, digital talent scholarships that would help participants study cloud computing, internet of things, virtual reality, and digital marketing.

In the higher levels, the Ministry will offer a digital leadership academy meant to shape future leaders in the governmental and private sectors. “We are in partnership with overseas universities such as the Harvard Kennedy School, University of Oxford, National University of Singapore, and Tsinghua University,” Semuel explains.
