TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, on Monday reminded regional leaders to manage the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays which potentially increases public mobility and chances of Covid-19 transmission.

He noted last year’s end of year holidays had caused a growth in the number of coronavirus transmissions.

“I truly ask for this situation to be managed properly and have Christmas and New Year’s Eve run without causing any crowds,” said the President in instructing nationwide regional leaders through a virtual meeting from the Merdeka Palace on October 25.

According to a survey there are 19.9 million people who intend to travel to their hometowns during this holiday season. Jokowi insists that this is not a small number and must be properly prepared.

“Every province, sub-regions, and city must remind their residents not to travel anywhere during the holidays,” he said. “Nearly every epidemiologist fears the upcoming holidays would spark a third wave.”
