TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) announced that Indonesia's electricity supply is sufficient to meet current demands and pledged not to raise electricity rates for the next three months.

"For sure, the electricity right now is more than enough," said Rida Mulyana, ESDM Director General of Electricity on Thursday, October 21, 2021, as quoted by Bisnis.com. "There will be no tariff changes until the end of this year."

According to government data, the domestic electricity supply reaches 42.05 gigawatts with a peak load of 37.47 GW. This means that the country has 4.58 GW reserve electricity.

As of October 18, 2021, 19 regions in Indonesia recorded sufficient electricity supply with one region (Bangka) recording a deficit and two other regions on alert over low electricity supplies.

Bangka experienced blackouts due to a lack of supply under peak load. The region is able to provide a total of only 160 megawatts but experienced peak usage of 173.45 megawatts.

Other regions such as the islands of Java and Bali, Kalimantan, Papua, up to Sumatra are all able to cover their peak power usage with current power capabilities.

Until now, the installed capacity of the power plant has reached 73.8 GW. This figure is dominated by the State Electricity Company (Persero) or PLN at 43.6 GW or equals to 59.2 percent, Independent Power Producer with 28 percent or 20.6 GW, Private Power Utility with 5,012 MW or equals to 6.8 percent, the government 55 MW or 0.1 percent. , and the private sector IO reached 4,336 MW or 5.9 percent.

Based on types of power plants, Indonesia's electricity power source is still dominated 50 percent by PLTU (coal-fired power plants), 17 percent comes from PLTGU (steam and gas power plant), and PLTG/MG (gas-fueled power plants).
