Indonesia Eyes to Reach Net Zero Emission by 2060

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is committed to reaching net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060 or sooner. The government is still designing a roadmap to deal with various challenges and risks of climate change in the future.
“We have prepared a transition roadmap towards neutral energy from 2021 to 2060 with several key strategies,” said Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif as quoted from the ministry’s official page today, October 13.
To achieve the target, the government has prepared five main efforts, such as increasing the use of new and renewable energy, reducing the use of fossil energy, using electric vehicles in the transportation sector, optimizing electricity use in households and industry, and utilizing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
By 2050, the government targets to use new and renewable energy up to 87 percent and stop the sales of conventional fossil fuel vehicles. This means, gas-fueled vehicles cars will no longer be available at markets and will be replaced with electric-powered vehicles starting in 2050.
In 2027, the Indonesian government also expects the use of electric vehicles throughout the archipelago to reach 2 million units for four-wheeled vehicles and 13 million units for two-wheeled vehicles or motorcycles in order to achieve the net zero emission target by 2060.
