TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) is assisting 15 research on herbal medicines that can be used as additional medications for COVID-19.

“BPOM is now assisting 15 research on herbal medicines or natural-based medicines as an addition or adjuvant in COVID-19 therapy,” said the agency head Penny Kusumastuti Lukito in a webinar on herbal medicines and innovative phytopharmaceuticals in Jakarta, Wednesday, October 13.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, Penny said the discovery of natural medicines is also a priority for various studies on the handling of COVID-19.

She explained that of the total 15 research, two studies have completed the clinical trials and are in the process of registration. Seven studies are still undergoing the research process, two studies are still being assisted to arrange clinical trial protocols, and four studies are in the process of preclinical trials.

Additionally, Penny revealed that there were 68 other studies being assisted by BPOM related to the COVID-19 treatment. BPOM provides intensive support starting from upstream at the research stage up to assisting researchers and business actors in the development of drug products.
