TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian language, or Bahasa Indonesia, was designated as the State language on August 18, 1945, the day after Indonesia declared its independence. It is also the national language spoken by Indonesians.

Not many people know, however, that Bahasa Indonesia is also an official language in other nations.

According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Indonesian is used and studied in 30 countries as of July 2021. There are also 76 institutions and 7,638 foreign nationals studying Indonesian.

One of the countries that uses Indonesian as an official language after their national language is Vietnam. This is done by Vietnam to improve Indonesian language studies and maintain bilateral relations with Indonesia.

The government of Ho Chi Minh City announced Indonesian as a second official language in December 2007. The use of Indonesian in Vietnam is on par with English, French, and Japanese.

Indonesian is also a mandatory language used by the Cambodian Army.

Another interesting fact; Bahasa Indonesia was played in outer space in 1977, through the recordings of the Satellite Voyager (NASA).
