TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pandu Riono, an epidemiologist from the University of Indonesia or UI, said he had foreseen that by October Jakarta would have zero Covid-19 deaths.

"I had predicted it since the end of September. I had said that by October DKI would have zero Covid deaths," he told Tempo, Friday, September 8.

Pandu said this was possible because Jakarta prioritized vaccine rollouts for the elderly and people with comorbidities early on. He said that these are people who are most vulnerable to Covid-19.

"What to do next is for other regional governments to learn from Jakarta's experiences," Pandu said.

The epidemiologist said Jakarta proved that the pandemic can be contained by pushing [vaccine rollouts] for risk groups. "Jakarta is an example that, through this huge experiment of ours, Indonesia can [control Covid-19]."

Pandu hopes that all regions in Indonesia will also be able to curb their respective Covid-19 mortality rates.
