The 10 Largest Rice-Producing Provinces in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rice is one of the staple foods of the Indonesian people. Some areas are also the largest rice producers. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded that rice production in the archipelago reached 17.51 million tons of dried unmilled rice (GKG) from January to May 2021.

Citing from the Ministry of Agriculture’s data in 2019, here are the 10 largest rice-producing provinces in the country:

  1. Central Java Province, with a total harvested area of approximately 1,678,479 hectares, producing around 9,655,653 tons of unhusked rice or 5,539,448 tons of rice.
  2. East Java Province, with a harvested area of 1,702,426 hectares, producing 9,580,933.88 tons of unhusked rice or 5,496,581 tons of rice.
  3. West Java Province, with a harvested area of 1,578,835 hectares, producing 9,084,957 tons of unhusked rice or 5,212,039 tons of rice.
  4. South Sulawesi Province, with a harvested area of 1,010,188 hectares, producing 5,054,166 tons of unhusked rice or 2,899,575 tons of rice.
  5. South Sumatra Province, with a harvested area of 539,316 hectares, producing 2,603,396 tons of unhusked rice or 1,493,568 tons of rice.
  6. Lampung Province, with a harvested area of 464,103 hectares, producing 2,164,089 tons of unhusked rice or 1,241,538 tons of rice.
  7. North Sumatra Province, with a harvested area of 413,141 hectares, producing 2,078,901 tons of unhusked rice or 1,192,665 tons of rice.
  8. Aceh Province, with a harvested area of 310,012 hectares, producing 1,714,437 tons of unhusked rice or 983,572 tons of rice.
  9. West Sumatra Province, with a harvested area of 311,671 hectares, producing 1,482,996 tons of unhusked rice or 850,794 tons of rice.
  10. Banten Province, with a harvested area of 303,731 hectares, producing 1,470,503 tons of unhusked rice or 843,627 tons of rice.

The calculation was carried out by BPS using the Area Sample Framework (KSA) method. In 2019, BPS recorded the national rice production reaching 31.31 million tons.
