TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 38 year old housewife in Wonogiri, Central Java, on Saturday last week reportedly died by suicide. The police suspect that it was caused by the series of harrassment from 23 illegal online lending firms which she had taken loans from.

Responding to the matter, the Financial Services Authorities (OJK) online lending task force head Tongam L. Tobing said the incident was concerning. He wishes nobody will face similar circumstances in the future.

“This is a valuable lesson for us that taking loans from illegal online lenders are extremely dangerous,” said Tobing on October 6, Bisnis.com reported. “Illegal online lending services are criminal activities, don’t let there be another victim.”

He called for the members of the public to report on illegal online lending activities, either initial offerings or the terror and intimidation from their debt collectors, to police or the OJK task force. Consulting with legal aid institutions can also be an alternative if victims intend to involve the police.

Jakarta Legal Aid (LBH Jakarta) has issued the self help tool kit in facing these illegal online lenders and online gender-based violence which can be downloaded for free from bantuanhukum.or.id.
