TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - People suffering from lingering symptoms of COVID-19, often referred to as “long COVID-19” or “post-COVID syndrome”, may potentially need re-hospitalization if the symptom worsens.

Indonesian Pulmonologists Association (PDPI) member Erlina Burhan said in a webinar on Thursday there was five percent potential for the symptoms to be progressive.

“[Long COVID-19] symptoms are generally mild but there is a five-percent possibility of being progressive, getting severe, and even needing re-hospitalization,” Erlina said.

The pulmonologist at the Persahabatan Hospital, East Jakarta, who is also a professor at the University of Indonesia’s Medical School (FK UI), said the post-virus syndromes included coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, headache, and body or muscle pain.

Erlina went on to say that the long symptoms were usually found in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with severe illness. “We rarely find it among asymptomatic patients or those with mild symptoms,” she added.

According to Erlina, each patient with long COVID-19 has a different recovery duration. Some may recover within 4-12 weeks, but others may regain health for over 12 weeks or even six months. “However, in most cases, patients recover to normal,” she concluded.
