TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Jokowi Widodo departed for Papua today, October 1, to open the XX National Games or PON at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura Regency, on Saturday, October 2.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md and Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian had earlier arrived in Papua to monitor the preparations of the national games. Today, they attended the dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony.

Tito said based on reports from the Papua Military Commander and the Papua Police Chief, many contingents from various regions had started the competition since September 22, 2021.

“Until today, everything goes smoothly,” said Tito in a written statement, Friday, October 1.

Mahfud also said the technical preparations for the opening ceremony, starting from the facilities, choreography of performers, and other needs have gone well. A number of activities that have been running also ran smoothly.

When asked about security, Mahfud said all relevant parties had taken all of the necessary measures. “Everything has been anticipated peacefully because this is a sports event,” he underlined.

Mahfud asked all officers of the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police, and the regional governments to work hard so as to ensure the opening ceremony of PON Papua that will be attended by President Jokowi could run safely without a hitch and in accordance with the health protocols.
