TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Jakarta city administration started to dredge Krukut River on Thursday, September 30, as a flood mitigation measure ahead of the rainy season.

Central Jakarta Mayor Dhany Sukma said Krukut River is the channel runoff of water from pipes along Jalan Bendungan Hilir. The dredging was targeted to reach a depth of one and a half meters.

“With a volume of approximately 700 square meters,” Dhany added during the dredging activity dubbed 'Gerebek Lumpur' on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman today, September 30.

The Mayor said 100 people were deployed to carry out the dredging aimed at preventing flooding. “We will complete it by mobilizing 10 heavy equipment, both large and mini excavators,” he said.

The Jakarta Provincial Government through the Water Resources Agency (SDA) launched Gerebek Lumpur programs simultaneously in five areas across the capital.

The program aims at preventing flooding which often hits the city during the rainy season. The agency head Yusmada Faizal said the program had been running since March 24, 2021, for the East Jakarta area and was continued in four other city areas gradually.

“Starting today, a total of 408 personnel from five city areas, as well as 46 Amphibi excavators and 123 dump trucks will be deployed gradually,” said Yusmada in a written statement, Thursday, September 30.
