TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government will continue to utilize the cleanliness, health, safety, and environment sustainability certificate (CHSE) as an official health protocol standard for the tourism sector despite facing opposition from tourism businesses and the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI).

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno on Thursday believes the implementation of CHSE will open the path for recovery in the tourism sector.

“Surely we must not get ahead of ourselves. We must remain cautious and I can see signs of economic recovery by implementing CHSE,” Sandiaga wrote in a statement on September 30.

A number of hotel and restaurant management previously sent a letter expressing their objection against the CHSE certification process as it would likely financially burden business owners who are already financially under pressure caused by the pandemic.

The PHRI Jakarta representative, Sutrisno Iwantoro, previously expressed his objection against the certification process, “We understand if the CHSE is to protect consumers, but it would be burdensome if it is mandated.”
