TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned all people to be aware of the potential for extreme weather during the transition period from the dry season to the rainy season. It cited hail and strong winds in Depok and Bogor City last Tuesday afternoon.

“Extreme weather potentially occurs during the seasonal transition period, starting from the rain with lightning and strong winds and hail,” said the agency head, Dwikorita Karnawati, in a press release published on its website on Wednesday, September 22, 2021.

Dwikorita said the weather could suddenly change as the wind direction was varied. In general, the morning weather is sunny then clouds begin to grow in the afternoon creating rainfall in the late afternoon or evening which may be accompanied by lightning and strong wind. This could also lead to flash floods and landslides.

“We appeal to people living in areas prone to landslides to be vigilant and careful,” she underlined.

The agency’s Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto added that in the next week, parts of Indonesia have the potential to experience heavy rain with lightning and strong winds.

Regions potentially hit by extreme weather are Riau, West Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua and Papua.
