TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Wednesday said that Indonesia must free itself from the trap of being a nation heavily reliant on exporting raw materials and urges industries to increase its exports on finished goods.

“The success era of raw material has ended, we must dare to change our economic structure that has been based on commodities and enter the innovation and technology-based development downstream,” said the President in the ‘ground breaking’ ceremony of the vehicle battery factory on September 15.

Indonesia has been known as an exporter of raw materials and the President plans to change that by exporting goods with added value such as in the nickel ore industry. As a country with a large nickel supply Jokowi believes in at least 4 years will be able to be a main exporter of nickel-based manufactured products.

“This industrialization will increase the added value of nickel ore commodity 6-7 times higher as a battery cell,” Jokowi said. “I can grow 11 times higher if the product becomes an electric car.”
