BMKG Detects Earthquake in East Priangan, West Java

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - An earthquake measuring 4.4 magnitudes on the Richter scale jolted the southern area of East Priangan, West Java, at 16:08 local time, Tuesday, September 14, 2021. The tremor was felt from Tasikmalaya until Pangandaran.

Based on the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and public reports, the quake was felt in Pamarican and Pangandaran at level III of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. The shaking was felt by people indoors and was similar to the passing of a truck.

Meanwhile in Cikelet, Pameungpeuk of Garut Regency and Parungponteng of Tasikmalaya Regency, the tremor was weaker at level I- II of MMI scale. To date, there has been no report of damages.

According to the Region II Tangerang BMKG Head Hendro Nugroho, the quake’s epicenter was detected in the sea, 58 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya, or precisely at 8.11 degrees south latitude and 107.89 degrees east longitude. The hypocenter was at a depth of 16 kilometers.

“It was a shallow earthquake due to the subduction of the Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plate,” said Hendro in a written statement. BMKG further appealed to people to remain calm and not be easily influenced by baseless issues.
