Jokowi Introduces Bendo Dam in East Java, Costing Rp1.1 Trillion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Tuesday officially introduced the latest national irrigation project 'The Bendo Dam' that cost Rp1.1 trillion in Ponorogo Regency, East Java.
The dam that is able to accommodate 43.11 million cubic meters of water across 170 hectares is located in the Bendo Village. It is hoped to help improve irrigation services for 7,800 hectares of fields in Ponorogo and Madiun; two Regencies established as East Java’s agriculture center.
“I officially inaugurate the Bendo Dam in Ponorogo, East Java,” said the President on September 7.
Apart from being a source of agricultural irrigation, the new dam is hoped to become a source of domestic water use and industries that can deliver water up to 370 liters per second. It is also expected to reduce floods by 31 percent or 117.4 meter-cubic per second.
The Bendo Dam is 74 meters tall and covers the Keyang River, which comes from a bigger river, the Bengawan Madiun. The mega project was constructed by PT Wijaya Karya, PT Hutama Karya and PT Nindya Karya (KSO).
President Jokowi hopes the dam will be able to increase the region’s production and affect farmers’ welfare.
