TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitudes on the Richter scale jolted parts of Garut, West Java, and its surrounding areas on the early morning of Monday, August 23. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed it occurred at 04:13:04 local time.

The tremor was felt by residents in the areas of Pangandaran, Cijulang, Tasikmalaya, Pameungpeuk, Ciamis, Bungbulang, Cisompet, Ciparanti, Cikalong, and Cijagraon at scale III of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI).

The agency has not yet received any reports of damage in buildings as a result of the quake.

According to the Tangerang Regional II BMKG Head, Hendro Nugroho, its epicenter was in the southern sea of Java or the Indonesian Ocean, or precisely at 8.32 degrees South Latitude and 107.58 degrees East Longitude. It was about 93 kilometers southwest of Garut and at a depth of 1 kilometer.

“It is a shallow earthquake generated by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Eurasian Plate," Hendro explained on Monday, August 23. As of 06:00 local time, the BMKG did not detect any aftershocks.
