TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian vice president Jusuf Kalla, who is also a prominent peace mediator at a global scale, believes Afghanistan will not dwell in bloodshed and civil war after its capital city Kabul has fallen into the hands of the taliban.

“Both the Taliban and Afghanistan government equally believe they are all brothers and will not wage war against a country that has been left by the United States Army,” Jusuf Kalla wrote in his statement on August 16.

During his vice presidency, Kalla once represented Indonesia in the peacemaking between Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Taliban high ranking officers. Just last year in December he met with President Ghani in Kabul while in January this year he also met with Taliban’s highest military official Mullah Baradar in Qatar.

“They will strive to solve the 30-year Afghanistan conflict peacefully,” he wrote.

Jusuf Kalla also believes Taliban will stay true to their statement of not harassing embassies of international countries located in the country, which includes the Indonesian embassy. He encouraged Afghans under the Taliban to be more open to foreign partnerships for economic reasons.
