TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The net population data (DKB) of the year's first semester issued by the Home Affairs Ministry’s Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) showed the East Java population had dropped by 49,891 after the region reported a massive number of deaths amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a comparison, the region’s DKB in the second semester of 2020 was at 41,044,406 but has now shrinked to 40,994,515.

The region’s Women's Empowerment, Child Protection and Population Office Head Adriyanto said the decline came after the region reported massive death cases throughout January-July this year.

Adriyanto said this latest data were then reported to the central Population Administration Information System (SIAK) as the General Election Commission (KPU) was also cleaning up its database from the people who had passed away but were still recorded in family cards (KK).

He said the official deaths caused by COVID-19 in East Java as of August 8 amounted to 22,932 people with an estimated 5,733 children orphaned as their parents passed away due to the coronavirus.
