TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A powerful earthquake shook Tanggamus regency in Lampung, South Sumatra, on Friday evening, August 6. The quake was felt up to Pelabuhan Ratu in West Java.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG recorded the quake occurred at 18:08 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale (RS).

The epicenter was located at sea, 106 kilometers southwest off Tanggamus, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The intensity of the quake was measured the strongest in Liwa of West Lampung and the West Coast of Lampung at level IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.

Lower intensity, or at MMI level III, was felt in Kota Agung and Bandar Lampung. An earthquake with similar intensity was also felt in Pelabuhan Ratu, Cigenteng, and Bojong Genteng of West Java. Meanwhile, the areas of Bayah, Natar, Cisarua, and Panjang experienced even lower intensity.

A number of Lampung residents replied to the BMKG’s tweets on the earthquake, saying that the earthquake was quite strong in Central Lampung and Kota Agung and occured concurently with the sound of adzan maghrib or the dusk call to prayer for Muslims.
