TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the COVID-19 mortality rate in Java-Bali had decreased during the 13 days of the government’s emergency public activity restrictions or Emergency PPKM. On the contrary, the death rate outside of the regions had spiked, he added.

“The decline [in cases] in the Java area is followed by an increase outside of the Java area. This is because in Java it increased first, we intervened, now it’s the outside Java area that is climbing,” said he said on Monday, August 2, 2021.

However, the minister said the handling of the increasing rate outside Java-Bali would be faster compared to that of Java-Bali.

“We will be faster in handling [the rising death rate] outside Java because we will only have to replicate what we have done in Java. So, it can be faster and we learn from our experience on how to reduce the rate of transmission that occurs in Java,” said the minister.

Budi said his ministry was employing four strategies to reduce the country’s COVID-19 death rate. The strategies encompass monitoring oxygen saturation of self-isolating patients, optimizing access and scope of telemedicine, educating the public and self-isolating patients regarding respiratory rates, and building centralized isolation facilities.
