TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo asked his staffers to intensify the management of hazardous and toxic medical waste from the Covid-19 handling.

Widodo also requested that available funds be allocated to accelerate the availability of medical waste management facilities in all regions in line with the rising amount of medical waste in the wake of the pandemic.

“The President wants Rp1.3 trillion to be prepared to build facilities, especially incinerators and others. This will later be discussed by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Environment and Forestry Ministry (KLHK), and all related ministries,” said the KLHK Minister Siti Nurbaya in a written statement published on the Cabinet Secretariat website on Wednesday, July 28.

Based on the ministry’s data, Siti said there were 18,460 tons of medical waste as of July 27, 2021. The hazardous and toxic waste (B3 waste) came from healthcare facilities, emergency hospitals, isolation and quarantine centers, detection tests, and vaccinations.
