TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Covid-19 mortuary team in North Jakarta’s Sunter Agung sub-district on Wednesday revealed that there had been a surge in deaths from people undergoing self-isolation, Antaranews reported.

“There were three deaths in a day yesterday, there were days when two burials were done that is indeed caused by Covid-19,” said Warji, a member of the mortuary team tasked to handle the deaths related to coronavirus cases on July 21.

Another team member, Achmad Mustofa, echoed his colleague’s statement and maintains that despite the increase in cases, their team continues to prepare the necessary processes prior to burial.

After Preparing and packing the body Mustofa’s team immediately transfers the bodies to the special burial site in North Jakarta’s Rorotan cemetery. “They are already wrapped in plastic and are ready to be taken [to the burial ground].”

The sub-district has five teams with a combined total of 39 members with daily jobs to safely treat and prepare the bodies. The local community headman Danang Wijanarka said Sunter Agung initially handled an average of nine bodies per day but he claimed that the number of deaths during Covid-19 self-isolation has gradually dropped.

“There were none in the past week, we do hope those in self-isolation are now all healthy,” he said.
