TEMPO.CO, Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia recorded a fresh high of 135 single-day death toll from COVID-19 on Thursday, July 8, bringing the total deaths to 5,903, according to the health ministry.

Another 8,868 new infections were reported in the second-highest single-day tally since the outbreak, bringing the national total to 808,658.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and the adjacent state of Selangor, which are under strict movement restrictions, are seeing large-scale screening as the number of detected cases are expected to increase.

Health Minister Adham Baba announced additional resources will be allocated for COVID-19 care in Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding area, due to the severe pressure on the area's healthcare system.

The measures include setting up more intensive care unit (ICU) beds, field hospitals, oxygen tanks and low-risk treatment centers as well as mobilizing frontliners from other states to boost available manpower, he said in a statement.
