TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several members of the University of Indonesia’s Student Executive Board (BEM UI) experienced cyber attacks as their social media accounts got hacked. The hacking occurred following the board’s controversial Instagram post that criticized President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

“There is the hacking of social media accounts belonging to several members of 2021 BEM UI,” said BEM UI chairman Leon Alvinda Putra in a written statement on Monday, June 28.

Leon said one of the victims is the board’s head of public relations Tiara. She said she could not access her WhatsApp account. The board’s deputy chairman Yogie also found that his WhatsApp account was hacked but it has now been recovered.

The hacking also targeted the board’s coordinator for social and environmental affairs, Naifah Uzlah. There were attempts to log into her Telegram account at midnight.

The board’s head of action and propaganda department Syahrul Badri, meanwhile, found his Instagram account ‘restricted’ after uploading a number of Instagram Story about the summon of BEM UI management by the UI Rectorate. As a result, his account cannot be used until now.

“We strongly condemn all forms of digital attacks towards the management of BEM UI,” said Leon.

The BEM UI’s Instagram post saying Jokowi The King of Lip Service became public limelight. The UI Rectorate considered the post violating the regulations in expressing opinions so it called in all student board managers. The BEM UI insisted that it would not delete the post.
