Erick Thohir Urges Indonesia to Become Global Halal Product Hub

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir in a virtual event on Monday encouraged the sharia economy society (MES) to wake up and break out of their comfort zone as he believes Indonesia has the largest halal consumer’s market for halal products but not as producers.
“Yes, we are the number one consumers of global halal products but are still fifth in terms of halal product producers,” said Erick Thohir in his opening speech at the 1st Indonesia Internasional Halal Fair & 2nd InterContinentalk that was held virtually on June 21.
He then encouraged people that today is the time to change hope into a reality by setting a goal of becoming the largest halal producer by the year 2024. The Minister insists that the local business culture must build strength and independence to take on this challenge.
“This needs energy, synergy, innovation, and consistency. Today’s initiatives are a part of that effort,” said Erick Thohir. He also underlined the fact that Indonesia must be able to not only dominate the domestic halal market but also at the global scale.
