TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Mahfud MD on Sunday Tweeted about his support for the legal restriction that limits the country’s presidency to a maximum of two terms.
“Personally, I agree with the current regulation, limiting it to a maximum of 2 terms. The constitution mandates it, among others, limiting authority in scope and time period,” the former chief justice wrote in Twitter through his personal account @mohmahfudmd on June 20.
He initially responded to a question from a twitter user about the issue but Mahfud MD insists that he is not the perfect person to be asked about extending a president’s ruling term and said that this is within the authority of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and political parties.
Rumors about efforts to extend the presidency of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo emerged again after a group declared its support for Jokowi to run again in the Presidential Election of 2024, even though the country’s constitution explicitly limits it to two periods.
The group in question touts itself as ‘Jokowi-Prabowo 2024’ and has also blatantly pushed for a Constitutional Amendment.
The group in support of the Jokowi-Prabowo pair claims that many people yearn for the current president to run again for presidency and defends that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic along with the increasing polarization among society as the main reasons.
