Former Garuda CEO Sentenced to One Year Probation for Smuggling Harley Davidson

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tangerang District Court gave former Garuda Indonesia president director I Gusti Ngurah Askhara Danadiputra aka Ari Askhara a 1-year probation sentence. The same sentence is given to another defendant in the Harley Davidson smuggling case, Iwan Joeniarto. Ari is also ordered to pay a fine of Rp300 million. The sentence was rendered on Monday, June 14, 2021.
The defendants were proven guilty of smuggling items onboard a commercial plane, including Brompton bicycles and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, from Europe to Indonesia.
"If the defendant does not pay the fine within one month, the Public Prosecutor will seize their assets to be auctioned off," said Chief Justice Nelson as he reads the verdict, Monday, June 14, 2021.
If the fine is paid but insufficient, then Ari must serve an additional sentence of three months in prison. Meanwhile, the Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Brompton bicycles have been confiscated.
Iwan Juniarto was also given a 1-year probation sentence and is ordered to pay a fine of Rp150 million, which if not paid in full would cost him two months of imprisonment.
Responding to the verdict, Ari, Iwan, and their lawyers said they would think about it before accepting or filing an appeal.
