TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Garuda Indonesia decided to reduce the operation of its fleet again from 70 to 53 of its total 142 planes.

Garuda president director Irfan Setiaputra said the number of airplanes used during the COVID-19 pandemic was adjusted to the market and demand for flight services, as well as the enforcement of community activity restrictions. Thus, the airline has to adjust or reduce the flight frequency and optimize the fleet in crowded routes.

Besides, the number of aircraft operated must also consider the loading level of cargo transportation. “The number of fleet operated during the pandemic is decreased so only 53 aircraft are in operation to support the company,” said Irfan in a statement to the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) quoted by Bisnis.com on Friday, June 11.

The publicly listed company under the code of GIAA detailed that 39 of 142 units were under maintenance, and that most of the aircraft or 136 units were leased planes.

Garuda was committed to maintaining the condition of aircraft in accordance with flight regulations approved by the Directorate of Airworthiness and Aircraft Operation (DKUPPU) of the Transportation Ministry.

At present, Garuda Indonesia is conducting a comprehensive study on the company’s operation, strategy, business transformation, and finance as part of its restructuring effort.
