TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Development Planning (Bappenas) Minister Suharso Monoarfa on Wednesday’s webinar revealed that Indonesia’s food loss and waste from the year 2000 to 2019 reached 23-48 million tons annually, equates to 115-184 kilograms per capita annually.
Citing Antaranews, the data he revealed came from a collaborative analysis between the Indonesian government and the United Kingdom’s foreign commonwealth office on food loss and waste for the past 20 years.
“This surely creates an effect towards the environment which creates a total greenhouse gas emissions of 1,702.9 megatons C02-ek,” said Minister Suharso on June 9.
He also said the waste also affects the economy Rp213-551 trillion annually, which is equal to 4.5 percent of Indonesia’s GDP. Meanwhile, the social impact of the losses is that the number equates to the meal portion of up to 125 million people or 47 percent of the Indonesian population.
The Global Hunger Index scores Indonesia’s situation as moderate after five consecutive years staying within the ‘serious’ category.
“The Indonesian government is strengthening its commitment through the low carbon development policy in a number of regulations, which include Indonesia’s middle-national development plan of 2020-2024,” said Suharso.
