TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the 26th Conference of Parties (COP) United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Alok Sharma, expects Indonesia to take a more ambitious step to achieve the net zero emission goal. This was conveyed in the press conference at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 2.

Indonesia’s commitment towards that goal was previously mentioned by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in April’s Leader Summit on Climate 2021. But Sharma argued that Jokowi had not mention the deadline to achieve the goal.

“Our message is to remain consistent, we want an ambitious zero emissions target that can be achieved in the middle of this century,” said Sharma during an interview on June 1.

He acknowledged that Indonesia has taken its best efforts to reach the zero emissions goal as soon as possible. But he believes that the country is able to exceed its goal.

Therefore, Sharma expects Indonesia to attend the 26th Conference of Parties (COP) United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in November in Glasgow, with a more specific goal.

He noted the effort shown by Indonesia by reducing the use of coal and other fossil-based energy towards a greener and more sustainable ways of creating energy.

On Monday, May 31, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya asserted that Indonesia has shown its best effort to reach the Net Zero Emission goal. She also announced that her ministry has set a deadline in 2030.
