TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Information (Kominfo) Ministry said the first stage of the termination of analog broadcasts or known as the analog switch off, or ASO, must be kicked off no later than August 17, 2021. The transition of television transmissions from analog to digital was planned to be held for the next year.

“The transition process has started now,” the ministry announced via its Instagram official account on Monday, June 1.

The ministry explained that there will be a total of five stages of ASO. Five provinces joined the process in the first stage are Aceh, Riau Islands, Banten, East Kalimantan, and North Kalimantan.

The areas include Aceh Besar, Banda Aceh, Bintan, Karimun, Batam, Tanjung Pinang, Serang Regency, Cilegon, Serang City, Kutai Kartanegara, Samarinda, Bontang, Bulungan, Tarakan, and Nunukan.

“Despite the digital broadcasts, old TVs can still be used,” the ministry ensured.

The Kominfo Ministry explained that old televisions could still be used by installing a Set-Top Box (STB) which is said to be affordable and easy to install. “There will be no fee and subscription. It is also not an internet streaming, so it will not need phone credit,” as quoted from the ministry’s account.
