TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry director general for multilateral cooperation, Febrian Alphayanto Ruddyard on Tuesday said Indonesia has successfully pushed for a United Nations General Assembly emergency session to address the situation in Palestine.

Alhamdulillah, later on Thursday there will be a general assembly specifically discussing the situation in Palestine,” said Febrian in the House (DPR) hearing on Tuesday, May 18. He added that it was attributable to the joint statement of 3 ASEAN country members, which are Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam on May 16.

Based on the statement, Indonesia is coordinating with the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-aligned Movement (NAM) to gather and hold a general assembly to discuss the situation in Palestine.

The three ASEAN leaders condemn the violations of international laws by Israel. They therefore called for an “urgent and responsible collective action to ensure the necessary accountability for such violations.”

“We call upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint, cease attacks against civilians, take steps in de-escalating the situation and to uphold international law and order,” the statement wrote.

The United Nations Security Council has been called on to take urgent actions for Palestinian civilians across the occupied territory.
