TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi predicted that around 400,000 travelers from Sumatra will gradually return to Java starting from Sunday after celebrating Eid al-Fitr in their hometowns. “On that basis, we need to conduct intense coordination to control it,” he said on Sunday, May 16.

To anticipate the Eid return traffic, Budi Karya added, travelers departing via Bakauheni Port were required to undergo a rapid antigen test before departure. Passengers were also asked to carry out an independent medical test in their regions to avoid crowds in port.

“And they must carry the negative result of the rapid antigen test before departure,” he said.

The Transportation Minister made the statement after a coordination meeting in Bakauheni Port, Lampung, on Sunday, May 16, or day eleven of the Eid homecoming ban.

Budi Karya further mentioned that the COVID-19 Task Force reported a significant surge in COVID-19 cases in almost all provinces of Sumatra Island. Thus, tightening the movement of passengers, particularly those from Sumatra to Java Island via Bakauheni Port, was necessary to prevent virus transmission.
