TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Fadil Imran said one million people had been entering and exiting the Greater Jakarta area prior to the implementation of the mudik ban (homecoming ban), which is effective from May 6-17, 2021.

“The number of incoming and outgoing vehicles at the gates of Cikupa and West Cikarang toll roads was around 700,000, while train and air transportation passengers reached around 300,000,” Fadil said at the City Hall on Friday, May 14, 2021.

Besides using cars, trains and airplanes, many homecoming travelers were riding motorcycles and passing the Kedungwaringin area to go to Central Java and East Java, he added.

“There were around 100,000-200,000 people travelling back to their hometowns,” he said.

Despite the figure, Fadil claimed the police’s checkpoint posts had successfully reduced the incoming and outgoing traffic in the capital by 50 percent.

Fadil said the data would be discussed in the Jakarta Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) to anticipate the potential spike in COVID-19 cases after Eid holidays.
