TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Police have turned back tens of thousands of vehicles until the first day of Eid al-Fitr on Thursday, May 13, 2021.

Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said the vehicles were netted during the first eight days of the capital police’s 2021 Ketupat Jaya Operation that kicked off on May 6, 2021.

“The number of vehicles that were asked to turn around reached 64,612,” he said in a written statement in Jakarta on Thursday, May 13, 2021. Motorcycles dominated the figure with 47,627.

During the Eid mudik (homecoming) ban, the Jakarta Police set up 21 blocking points and 23 checkpoints in the areas under its jurisdiction.

In the operation, the police also intercepted a number of illegal shuttle vans. “There were 17 illegal travel vans that we asked to turn around,” he said.

The joint operation, which involved personnel from the police, the Jakarta Regional Military Commander and the Jakarta administration, seeks to suppress the flow of this year’s Eid homecoming travels as COVID-19 cases always climb after long holidays.
