Jokowi Says Food Security Must Be Achieved without Import

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo visited the paddy field and rice harvesting site in Kanigoro Village, Malang, East Java, Thursday, April 29, 2021. On that occasion, he said that the government wanted to ensure that rice production could meet the needs of the Indonesian people.
The certainty of the production amount, he went on, is vital for the government's calculation to meet people's needs for food.
“So we do not need imports. The calculations must be precise because this is about people's essential needs; eat,” said the President in his statement.
Widodo said the planting of a rice variety named IPB 3S on one-hectare land yielded good results as it could produce up to 12 tons of unhulled rice. This should be further improved, he added.
“So we can achieve food security, food sovereignty without having to import from other countries,” he underlined. In the process, he acknowledged that farmers need technology infrastructure to reach the goal.
During the visit, Jokowi was also asked by farmers to bring in harvesting machines, tractors, and other equipment. “We will fulfill this as it is highly needed by the farmers here,” he said.
